Your first step...

Your very first step is to obtain a copy of the "Road Sense for Drivers" at your local Driver Services Center. You can find their phone number and address by looking up "ICBC" in your White Pages. Thoroughly study the guide to prepare for your knowledge test.

If you are 16 years or older, you can take the computerized knowledge test at any Driver Services Center, no appointment is needed. If you are under 19 years old, a parent or guardian must accompany you and sign for your Learner's License, now called a Class 7L license. You will be asked 20 knowledge questions and 20 road sign questions from the "Safe Driving Guide". You must score 80% on each of these tests, and pass a vision test. Be sure to bring one piece of primary I.D. - a birth certificate is best - and one piece of secondary I.D. for example: passport, school I.D. card. A class 7L license is valid for two years.

You don't need a Learner's License to start the Orchard Valley Course, however we recommend you get it right away so we can arrange your driving lessons.

Once you have your Learner's permit...

With the new Graduated Licensing system, any new driver must gain 12 months experience before trying their road test.

Your Class 7L license expires in two years. You must rewrite the knowledge test if the license expires.

A supervisor 25 years or older with a valid Class 1-5 driver's license must accompany you when you drive. Limit of two passengers, INCLUDING your supervisor. You must display the "L" sign.

No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. Zero blood alcohol content.

The Road Test

What you'll be tested on:

Driving situations and rules of the road including starting, stopping, turning, passing vehicles and land driving, driving through controlled and uncontrolled intersections, parallel parking and backing up, anticipation of hazardous conditions, and other safe driving practices like driving the right speed and steering techniques.

Your First Road Test

Orchard Valley students usually take their road test in an Orchard Valley car, the same one they learned in.

The road test will take about 45 minutes and includes:

  • cornering techniques
  • proper lane usage
  • parking skills
  • left turns at signalized intersections and;
  • general observation

Do your best to relax and show the examiner what you know!

Once you pass your road test, new driver's move into the second stage of graduated licensing: your Class 7 License. Your new Class 7 License is valid for 5 years. You still need to display a sign on your vehicle whenever you go driving, but now it is a green "N" sign. Check with us, or ICBC, about the other restrictions that apply during this stage.

Your Second Road Test

You can apply anytime after gaining 24 months of driving experience, for the second road test. If you take our ICBC-approved course, you only have to obtain 18 months of experience. It is a more advanced test to see how your driving skills have developed over the past 24 months. When you pass the test, you will earn a full-privilege Class 5 Driver's License!
